Malaysia consists of 14 states. Each state has its own distinctive style of traditional headdress, which has been handed down through the generations for both men and women. The headgear is typically worn at cultural ceremonies. As part of the initiatives to digitally archive the cultural heritage items, the artwork serves as a virtual preservation of the traditional headdresses. These headpieces are from Perak, a state in Malaysia that is located on the western part of the Peninsula. Purple is Perak's royal color, and it can be seen in the "Songket" material used to make the "Tengkolok" male headgear. The female headgear design, which was originally made of gold, represented the beauty and strength of Perak's ladies.
