Pattern Design Utilizing Object Detection Program

These patterns were created for the first-anniversary identity design of the Design Research Institute in Tokyo. Typically, when designers develop the identity for a building or organization, they often select and employ a single representative symbol. However, the identity of this building is not conveyed through a single symbol mark, but rather through the placement of patterns throughout the structure. To achieve this, I combined various shapes and colors to programmatically generate hundreds of patterns. This pattern design was crafted through the following process. Firstly, I captured images that effectively showcased the distinct characteristics of the building. Then, using an Object Detection program, I simplified and transformed these images into vector symbols. Finally, I incorporated 18 colors to symbolize the building, resulting in the creation of hundreds of patterns. These patterns displays some of the patterns that have undergone this process.
